Preparing Essex County for the Future
Education and workforce development are essential to the county’s economic future. By strengthening coordination between already strong county institutions, improving transparency, and investing strategically, Essex County can build a system that connects residents to real opportunity and supports long-term economic growth.
Shawn Klein’s goal is simple: make Essex County a place where education leads directly to opportunity and where local institutions work together to prepare the next generation of workers and leaders.
Workforce & Career Pathways
Essex County has a unique opportunity to build a stronger pipeline from education to employment. The county plays an important role in shaping the direction of Essex County College, Essex County Schools of Technology, and the Essex County Workforce Development Board. Together, these institutions should form a coordinated system that prepares residents for real careers and meets the needs of local employers.
Shawn Klein believes Essex County can build upon an already robust web of institutions by connecting education, training, and workforce development into a clear pathway that leads to opportunity. By aligning programs with industry demand, Essex County can help residents access careers in health care, logistics, public sector trades, advanced manufacturing, information technology, building maintenance, green infrastructure, and public safety support roles.
Building a Stronger Workforce Pipeline
Shawn Klein supports creating a more seamless path from high school training to college programs and careers. That means:
-
Expanding dual-enrollment and early-college programs that allow students at Essex Tech to earn credits at Essex County College.
-
Creating clearer education-to-employment pathways for adult learners and career changers.
-
Establishing employer advisory councils that help determine which programs expand and how many training seats are offered each year.
-
Developing countywide workforce dashboards that track which programs lead to strong job placement and family-supporting wages.
Appointing the Right Leaders
County government plays a critical role through appointments to boards and governing bodies. Shawn Klein believes these appointments should continue to prioritize expertise and accountability.
His approach includes:
-
Publishing clear criteria for board appointments.
-
Recruiting trustees and board members with experience in finance, higher education, labor, workforce development, and industry.
-
Requiring public reporting on board attendance, committee participation, and outcomes.
-
Increasing transparency so residents understand who governs county education institutions and how decisions are made.
Expanding Career and Technical Education
Career and technical education programs are among the most in-demand educational opportunities in New Jersey. Essex County should expand access and ensure programs reflect the modern economy.
Key priorities include:
-
Increasing program capacity where waitlists are longest.
-
Aligning vocational programs with current employer demand rather than outdated models.
-
Improving transportation and scheduling access so students from every part of Essex County can participate.
-
Expanding shared-time and adult technical education programs, not just full-time academy seats.
Increasing Transparency in County Education
Many residents know their local school boards, but far fewer understand how county-level education institutions are governed. Shawn Klein believes transparency and accountability should be standard by expanding upon current visibility programs.
He supports:
-
Creating a public county education portal that lists board appointments, terms, vacancies, agendas, budgets, and performance metrics.
-
Providing clear explanations of how county education budgets and governance work.
